Artist's Statement

Jessica Lam was born and raised in an urban neighborhood of South San Jose, California to a family of Vietnamese immigrants. As a student of San Jose State University currently majoring in Pictorial Arts and a native to the diverse bubble of the Bay Area, Jessica strives to capture the images of creatures that have long evaded her in the concrete jungle, both real and mythical. A testament to her determination, she was awarded the honor of displaying a piece on a door in the heart of her hometown granted by the very city that she grew up in. To this very day, you can still visit her door where it still stands only a few blocks away from San Jose State University.
Since she was a child, Jessica has been inspired by animated movies like the retro animation of old Disney movies and Japanese animated films. Her South-East Asian upbringing further enriched her life with its rich culture and traditions which continue to influence her artwork. Of course, her biggest influence has to be her love for animals and the world they inhabit. As a fairly shy and introverted person by nature, she turned to art to express herself in ways that words could not.
Growing up as a Vietnamese American woman in a community consisting primarily of other people of color, she hopes to be able to bring diverse perspectives to the forefront. She wants her art to reflect the America that she grew up with. To encapsulate the silhouettes of creatures of all kinds through her art is what Jessica has continued to strive for since she was a child. By using a wide range of mediums such as digital art, oil, acrylic, markers, colored pencils, etc, Jessica is able to bring these creatures to life from her mind.
