Artist's Statement

In this body of work, I show you ‘uncomfortable yet curious’ realms beyond our own, populated by the inhabitants who might live in these spaces. This show explores the thin line between ominous and interesting. I want the viewer to feel transported to the space, as if the work itself is a portal. When I think of these images, there is a strong mix of fear, wonder, and curiosity. Those emotions rest in my mind like the combination of flavor a five star dish produces. The content of the work is my take on liminal spaces. ‘Liminal spaces’ are defined as a threshold between the familiar and unknown.
The concept is an amalgam of a couple things; first I wanted to produce the work as is because the visual content alone is compelling, next I wanted to convey this strange feeling of anxiety to the viewer. The concept came from images produced from my imagination, in day dreams or real dreams. I want the images to elicit an uneasy feeling from the viewer. In an effort to satisfy my desire for a space that is simultaneously intriguing and off putting, my mind kept bringing these images into my mind's eye. I like to say the images produced from my subconscious were so powerful that they forced me tobring them into being. I work with this concept because it compels me to. The thought ofthe final product excites and motivates me to work on it; this is true for the majority of the work I produce. This series is an exploration of my working process.
