Artist's Statement

Time heals what reason cannot is a formal exploration of creating sharp and microbial forms with thinned down oil paint. The goal of this exploration was to convey a timeline of healing from emotional pain. The title for this exhibition was inspired by my friend who had told me those words during a difficult time in my life. I had been going through emotional pain and grief so heavy that it felt like I would never pass through it. No matter how much I tried to use logic, or tried to under- stand my feelings, I wasn't able to move on. However, two years later, I found my- self changed–I experienced so many more things and met so many people that the sadness I experienced is almost forgotten now. My friend was right, time did heal what reason could not.

In Time heals what reason cannot, I painted mostly in color compared to How Does It Feel?; another body of work I had completed previously. Working with color allowed me to create a new narrative using the same technique of thinning down my paint with various mediums. For me, emotional pain often manifests into something physical. And it is through this technique of making sinuous and vas- cular brush strokes, along with intense pigments that I am able to paint abstracted visuals of the bone deep hurt I had experienced and engulf the viewer in a turbu- lence of emotions. I wanted to represent the constant back and forth when healing from something that fundamentally changes you as a person.

Formally, these paintings are a culmination of what I have learned through experimenting with different mediums over the course of the year. This series of paintings and prints acted as a means of catharsis, in processing all of the emo- tions I felt as well as recognizing how grateful I am for the current state of my life. I dedicate this body of work to my dear friend Simmi, and all my loved ones who have shaped me into the person I am today.
