As I grew older, I began to recognize how different my childhood was compared to others. I was raised by my grandmother instead of my biological mother, who has been absent my entire life. My experiences are a reflection of growing up with someone who is two generations older than me. Even though I call her my grandmother, she is my mother wholeheartedly. My grandmother had just retired when I was born but immediately took up the job of raising me and my younger brother shortly after. Looking back on my childhood, I realize the struggles she faced when raising children at her age. My dad helped raise us but my grandmother was my main caretaker. In my series, Am I Your Daughter?, I reflect on how our relationship has grown over the years and our connection while being two generations apart. Growing up my grandmother taught me how to embroider so I wanted to incorporate my skills by connecting each photo with the thread. I learned from watching her my entire life. Despite the challenges of our age difference, our relationship has always been strong. In my photographs, I captured what my childhood looked like, our similarities, and the gap between generations. Images of the home I grew up in are scattered around to remind myself of past memories. My family calls me, “little grandma” for we are so alike in many ways. My childhood was a lesson for both of us and I continue to learn from her wisdom. Thank you for everything, Grandma.
