Artist's Statement

BeYoutiful is a series that emphasizes the importance of recognizing and valuing one's inner beauty and capacity amidst the rapidly changing world of contemporary society. I realized how my perspective and energy had been influenced by the community and people I encountered, leading me to doubt my capabilities. Drawing inspiration from the idea of living in the present from Zen, meditation, and the poem BeYoutiful by Jennifer Lynn, I turned inward to gain a better understanding of myself. The series captures self-discovery, reinforcing the idea of cherishing one's abilities: blossoming, and shining as our authentic selves.

Not so long ago, I found myself struggling with the idea of changing my career path and abandoning my dream job. The constant distraction of the competitive job market weighed heavily on my mind, leading to multiple bouts of discouragement. I have been witnessing my friends, who share my passion for art and design, facing the same issue between their aspirations and the practicalities of making a living, which only added to my frustration. As an art student, I must learn many tools and software, and I also touch the coding field to meet the qualifications. But it is never enough. The job description and the list of qualifications are getting longer and longer. It got to the point that I felt I was turning into a machine and completely forgot my personal calling.

I then reflected on my journey and recalled that theater was where my passion was sparked. The whole world becomes mysterious and miraculous under the light of the stage. There were meaningful stories I wanted to watch, and other than that, I loved the process of making a play. A good performance requires a huge contribution from many people from various positions including the performers and backstage people such as writing, composing, stage designing, lighting, imaging, posters, etc. The artists made me choose this path. I wanted to become a designer because I wanted to follow their footprint, contribute beautiful work to society, and make life more meaningful.

I ended up stopping the negative thoughts flowing in my head. I treasure both the good and bad experiences that I have been through. I accepted and opened to the realistic situation now that society is expecting art students more. Chasing technology and trying to fulfill the expectations of others are not the solutions that I am aiming for. Instead, I practice selecting the appropriate skills that help me build up my knowledge to be able to survive on the field and also keep my aesthetic voice. I believe art is always flexible, adaptable, and capable of transforming into various forms to go along with the development of the world.

If life is considered a play and we have to play a role or different roles, good actors are the ones who make their role(s) shine.
