Artist's Statement
As humans, we exist for a very short amount of time in comparison to atoms, the planet, or the cosmos. Though scary to think about, the fact that we die and make the smallest mark on the universe is what makes us human. We are ephemeral, we are temporary, we are fragile, and we are beautiful through this single life and existence that we have to live.
We accumulate memories and experiences throughout our lifetime and as we grow old our bodies change and become fragile. We slowly lose our bodily autonomy. This is how life goes, just as how death is what stops our heart from pumping blood through our body, our brain from thinking, and brings our life to its end.
The idea of losing my physical independence, that I will slowly lose those around me to death, and what comes after we close our eyes for eternity terrifies me. But that is what comes with being human. All the knowledge, experiences, encounters, and memories that we gain add to our lives. We make this single life we have to live worthy by the beauty we find in it and when we accept the fact that everything we build up will fall when we face death.
The show's primary colors are red and white for the elegance in the color combination, its haunting and delicate qualities, the timelessness of both colors, and the symbolism for blood, bones, mourning, and life. I want to highlight how human life is fragile, that our health and feelings of invincibility are temporary, and how our existence in itself is quite beautiful.
On Earth We Are Briefly Gorgeous is a capsule of my memories and thoughts of human fragility, my attempt to recognize and respect life and health, to come to terms with death, and to retain and amplify my regard for the present and the life I have to live right now. Our ephemerality, temporality, and accumulation of non material wealth makes this short life we have more precious. In the end, we all become dust and shadows, so while we are here, we may as well live brightly and beautifully.
