Artist's Statement

We Are America is a photographic series of ten digital portraits which examine the diversity of ethnicities within the United States. In this series, 16 different ethnicities from all around the world are represented by 10 persons. To visually communicate each person's ethnicity or ethnicities, I sliced prints of their respective flag or flags together. I unified them to represent how our ethnicities are interlaced with the sense of who we are

The United States is the country with the largest immigrant population in the world. It consists of more than 50,500,000 people. Germany's immigrant population is the second largest, yet our immigrant population is more than three times larger. Not only being in the United States was important for the development of this series, but also being in the state of California. California has more immigrants than any other state. We Are America depicts the ethnic diversity that makes up our community and it is a very concise representation of this diversity within the U.S. population.

As a person who also identifies with a foreign ethnicity, the representation of immigrant people and people of immigrant descent in the United States resonates deeply with me. Despite being part of the largest immigrant population in the world, we are still considered a minority. However, we are still a part of the U.S. population and, therefore, we are America.
