Artist's Statement

Sacrificios is a series of oil paintings based on the struggles and accomplishments of my family to get to where they are today. Portraying acts of work, love, and sacrifices allows me to reconnect with my traditions, memories, and family. My parents worked day and night to provide for my sister and me; they gave us an opportunity for a better life. That was the source of inspiration for this series.

My work revolves around the experiences and challenges throughout my life; it is a safe space where I bring attention to important people, memories, challenges, and traditions that have influenced who I am today. The mediums I use include oil and acrylic paint, graphite, charcoal, colored pencils, and more.

Recently, I have been working more with oil paint to depict images of people in my life doing their daily tasks to provide for their families. More specifically, the moments shared between family and coming together to celebrate accomplishments. I also re-explored the concept of making 3D font piñatas, which I relate to my family traditions and celebration of life. They spell out the Spanish word Sacrificios, which means Sacrifices. Piñatas are a traditional staple element of my family parties; I grew up with memories of having a birthday party and a piñata to look forward to breaking.

I am celebrating my family's accomplishments by depicting the sacrifices that helped me get to where I am today. Their love, help, and support mean a lot to me, and I dedicate this series to them. I ultimately enjoy creating work that celebrates and represents who I am and what I value in life. I hope that people can relate to and appreciate my motives.
