Artist's Statement

Growing up in America as an Asian American, noticing the stereotypes and preconceived notions that came with Asian features was prevalent. From failing to meet western standards of conventional beauty, to the objectification of individuals, Asian Americans have always been dehumanized and viewed as novelties throughout the history of western media and pop culture. In addition to Asian women being fetishized and hyper-sexualized by society, Asian men have faced discrimination in the same light, however often being viewed as weak, timid, and emasculated due to false preconceived notions fueled by racist stereotypes. For my project titled, Features, it is centered around Asian portraits in which I urge my audience to question the labels that come to mind with each subject. Why do these features hold such harmful connotations that are deeply embedded within our culture seen even today? How have these stereotypes caused greater ramifications upon our communities and how they interact with other communities? I hope to use this project to explore the aspects of Asian features through photography in my own style, in order to take more steps towards breaking down harmful stereotypes and the box that western media has confined “beauty” into, which have been established for many decades within our culture. My goal with Feature is to spark conversation on why Asian people are perceived the way they are in American culture.
